Telemedicine and teleconferencing

Several year ago at the British Ireland Council the IOM was given responsibility for taking the lead on telemedicine but nothing actually happened beyond producing a report from somebody who the retired.

You can teleconference all round the world avoiding the expense of travelling off island.

Why the contribution is important

It would save money in travelling expenses and give access to a wider range of professionals.

There is no reason to send people to the UK just to get signed off or for a review when the bloods etc can be taken here and posted and the consultation done over the video link.

I would like to hear the tele- consultation between an elderly deaf person and a harassed consultant! When I saw a consultant a few years ago,he chucked me a tome of 'explanatory notes' about my condition and spent the majority of time on his mobile phone. He didn't look at my test results until I said so and I got the distinct impression he was too busy and important to see me.
As I used to work as a nurse in the NHS I am able to stand up for myself but others are not so informed and accept the 'brush off'.Incidentally,Doctors are wary of treating nurses and sometimes don't like it when they want to discuss things a bit more thoroughly instead of accepting 'Doctor knows best'.
