And as someone else said, make it into a decent cycle track.

It maybe old and disinteresting to you (and me) but there are plenty of people who are interested. If we did away with everything loss making there would be nothing left by your rules.

Fortunately we are all different and enjoy different things. I accept that there are things I am not interested in but others are and that as a taxpayer I will have to fund. Indeed I will be on the steam railway this weekend with visiting family because they are interested in going on it. They also want to visit the (free) Manx Museum. Do you suggest we close this down as it is clearly loss making?

I think remembering our own personal histories and heritage is important in a world becoming more global. I think that the steam trains are a part of that. If it was between the trains or better healthcare then obviously I would chose healthcare but I do not think that we are so strapped for cash we cannot afford both.

Dil & Hamertime, the suggestion was close MER, not the steam railway. I've taken visitors on both, but no longer do with MER as most don't find it enjoyable. Snaefell Mountain Railway is another matter though, and I think keep that -visitors have always enjoyed it, and every time I've taken people it has been full. the MER bed between Douglas and Ramsey would have a valuable use resurfaced as a cycle track, encouraging commuting by bike whether all the way (possible very few interested), or at least part, and for leisure, both fo residents and visitors -far safer than the road,, and family friendly.

Keep Snaefell Mountain Railway - unique and very popular
Keep Douglas to Laxey - so you visitors can get to the Snaefell Mountain Railway
Scrap Laxey to Ramsey - the trip is dull, dull, dull (and cold too) but it would make a great cycle track

Whereas the Steam Railway has introduced theme nights and days so it is becoming quite popular and viable commercially, the MER seems to be stuck in the heady days when the Isle of Man was exotic and chugging up a wind blown mountain was both invigorating and character building. Now folks want entertainment not pneumonia and the MER could take a wind blown leaf out of the Steam trains book and do'electric evenings' to pull in the locals as well as tourists.
