Reduce MHK's to 12 - Do Not Fill The MLC Vacancy

Reduce the number of MHK's by 50%, and do not fill the current MLC position vacated by Mr Wild

Why the contribution is important

We have a population the size of a small UK town, which would usually be run by a town council, we simply do not need the amount of MHK's which we currently have, on top of town councils.

We have even less need for the current amount of MLC's.

I estimate the total cost saving of removing 12 MHK's, and not filling the current MLC vacancy, will be circa one million pounds, maybe more when the costs of elevating Mr Wild's the subsequent by-election is factored in.

This along with another 24 similar idea's will take us to our target.

Unlike a small town we have to develop and pass all our own legislation and regulation, so our parliament is different to a UK town council. A better analogy with a small town is that we don't need multiple local authorities here - this could and should all be done at the central level, with perhaps a few very local issues dealt with at "parish" level.

No, 24 MHKs must be preserved

There is much logic in doing away with LegCo tho'

Much Manx legislation is based on UK legislation, but often 20 years late.
Tynwald should have the courage to stand up to nationalists wingeing "dont just rubber stamp UK law". There are a lot of cases where doing so would make good sense. For example any law affecting healthcare. Our differences make it more difficult to attract doctors, social workers etc. What happens when I am sent away to an English hospital? Am I still trated according to Manx law? I do hope not.
But I forget. 'Rubber stamping' could greatly reduce the workload of Legco, and mean less jobs for the boys. Sorry, wont happen, silly idea.

Agree no MLC election should take place especially before that reform report MHKs keep telling us is about to happen.
