Prisoners should be allowed to work for the community.

Where prisoners are approaching the end of their sentences OR where they are judged trustworthy they should be engaged in work which benefits the whole community. eg rebuilding stonewalls on all the government land (hills or brooghs) or clearing litter from areas such as the Marine Drive.

The prisoners should be tagged so that they should not need to be heavily supervised.( tho of course they would have to be supervised. ) Work outside prison should be regarded as a privilege and in some cases such work could help prisoners become reintegrated into society .For instance someone who learns dry stone walling will have a trade on leaving prison. They would also have a sense of pride in having contributed to improving the appearance of the Island.

Volunteers should be saught to provide the training in new skills .

Why the contribution is important

Because it will improve the appearance of the Island, and help prisoners be rehabilited -these are factors which will benefit us all.

It would also help morale in prison, as if prisoners are given tangible "rewards" for good behaviour ( and I see this work as such an incentive) they will be more likely to cope with their sentences better as they will have a pathway towards  their release.

Good idea BUT this costs money not saves money.

Agreed this is a noble suggestion but will cost extra to implement. Better still to expand the Community service orders and ensure that each offender actually does some useful work that benefits the entire community.

Several people involved with the prison tell me that the prisoners grow a lot of vegetables in the prison garden. It sounds like an excellent idea.
However, it now appears to be the case that this produce is not sold.
(Years ago the produce was sold outside the prison.)
Some produce is used in the prison kitchens and the rest is thrown away/or composted.
Why is it no longer sold ?
It would be a good source of money for the prison / prison charities.

Work outside the prison has always been done by a few prisoners. This can only be where they can be trusted to work without supervision or are supervised by volunteers. More volunteers are needed.

Have been in prison my comments are based on the 21 months I spent there.
    1. Employ a dedicated night officers. At present they use any prison officer, and when you the benefits they receive are excessive.
    2. Seek tenders from the private sector for the running of the prison. This would prove either is value for money.
    3. The prisoners should be made into say three and they should then be taken to fill pot holes.
    4. The likes of the bound wall of park Road with demense road look terrible prisoners could paint the like of these properties owned by Government
    5. Another example is the marine drive you can't walk on the pavements and the railing fences are Im a terrible condition.
6 provide them when the TT is short of Marshalls.
    7. The soil which makes up Jurby airfield is excellent, so the prisoners could cultivate the current grassed areas.
