1.       Stop the routine prescribing of paracetamol, simple/codeine linctus, ibuprofen, loperamide (unless for chronic conditions) and sennakot.  All can be purchased without prescription.

2.       Increase prescription charges by 20 pence... still considerably cheaper than in the UK.

3.       Current arrangement involving free scripts for patients with endocrine disorders needs to be stopped.  If people are able to work, they should only receive the medication pertinent to their condition for free – not ALL scripts.

Why the contribution is important

To reduce the costs associated with providing free prescriptions.

Agree with all of this but think it needs to go further and the people who can make this happen are the Government and G.P.s together with reduced large volume prescription writing and exclusion of over the counter items.
Responsible Pharmacies do try to ensure the patients are not just ticking the same things for order over and over again and use of generic medication is more widespread, bringing the price of branded meds down by default, but it isn't enough and a more concerted effort is needed by people who actually know what is happening.By this I mean,Doctors, nurses and Pharmacy staff who see it every day,not some nameless wallah who is 'tasked' with looking into it.We need a working party of folks who volunteer to throw all the stuff into the ring as it were and discuss in real terms where savings can be made. I have several ideas which I have put foreward and would give my time for free if it meant helping to save money for our NHS. Give me a call !
