Prescribing of Non-Prescription Only Medicines (POMs)

Stop the prescribing of medication that does not require a prescription?

Why the contribution is important

It works out cheaper to the patient if they buy their one-off box of antihistamines from the chemist or supermarket, just a pound at the most, versus a prescription charge.

This is therefore cheaper for DHSC not providing a medication it does not actually need to pay for.

(I am aware there are instances where otc medication may need to be supplied in larger quantities than can be provided without a prescription - these are obviously not to what I refer)

yes it would stop folk going with children to the Doc to get a free bottle of paracetamol for a child . Cough & cold remedy should not be on prescriptions .

I can see a problem in that different brand prescriptions are actually different because of the manufacturing processes. What is good for one patient may not be for others in terms of side effects due to coatings and bulking agents. Also what is to stop the pharmacists being nobbled by the drug company reps to only stock the expensive brand names?

OldSailor - it is not a blanket suggestion, but something that needs to be in the minds of prescribers. It is in everyone's best interests to promote the use of generic medicines where available (and obviously clinically appropriate!).

Pharmacies have to dispense what is written on the prescription be it generic or brand and that descision is up to the Doctor who writes it.Incidentally, maybe the independent Pharmacies have 'drug reps' visiting them but I have worked many years in a chain Pharmacy and have never clapped eyes on one or heard of one visiting.I think you will find they tend to haunt the Doctors to persuade them to prescribe their drugs.Pharmacy computers print what has actually been dispensed in the margin and that is what you get paid by the pricing authority. It's a braver person than me who would claim for a brand and dispense a generic as licenses have been revoked and they always find out.Incidentally, with a lot of drugs, once the exclusive licence to manufacture runs out,the brand drug price often falls to compete with the generic drugs in the marketplace.
