All libraries should be under the same control.  Books should be shared, opening hours could be shared with full time staff going to different locations.

Fewer books would be needed, and a wider selection could be offered.  As long as there was a good ordering system/ database to access books available.

Why the contribution is important

Keeps libraries central, refreshes books available.  It is crazy that you cannot use a library of another town.   I would like to go to a Douglas libary, and my local one.

And why does Government have to duplicate what the local authorities are doing through the Family Library?

I believe Douglas a few years ago tried to start an initiative to get libraries to work closer together through a shared service route, yet the resistance from the other local authorities already operating their own library services was very negative. Time to tender for a whole Island service funded through the rates on a shared basis.

a national library service should hopefully make it more secure. There should be libraries in every town plus the mo bile service for outlaying areas. A centralised system would make the service cheaper, especially for books as they could share them.
