Introduce MOT's on the Island

Introduce MOT's on the Island.

Why the contribution is important

There are many benefits through introducing MOT's on the Island.

Additional taxes for Government (it will raise income levels).

The money spent on paying for the MOT's will support local businesses. The money will stay on the Island, thus helping the local economy.

Better maintained, safer vehicles on our roads/ less accidents

Creates employment (more mechanics needed/expansion of garage services)

Good for the environment, less pollution on our roads, this will help to reduce CO2 emissions and also assist the Government in achieving its environmental targets.

I would agree that bringing in an MOT will save money in the long-term. All the above points are valid, plus it will help to reduce the number of un-taxed and uninsured vehicles on the roads and help to bring in a much needed regulated inspection of vehicles. Start with vehicles over 10 years old and then reduce the requirement year on year until we reach the starting point of vehicles 5 years and older with an MOT every year.

Yes, that's right, hammer the motorist as usual.

Police could spend their time doing more useful things rather than watching out for lights that don't work.

If they bring in an MOT, we need to be sure the IOM will accept a UK issued one -

Agree that MOT is the right thing to do. But not necessarily follow the UK system. Look at other models too before deciding. i.e. do a thorough survey and think through all the implications. I personally know 2 teenagers who, in separate incidents recently, have both been driving 'cheap' cars and had their brakes fail. Both are lucky to be alive. That alone overcomes my resistance to another charge on motorists.
