Court fines and charges to be increased to reflect the true costs to society

Court fines, costs and charges should be increased to cover the cost of Police time and resources. They should reflect the true cost. Those that commit the crime should be made to pay for the criminal justice system that is in place beacuse they do not conform and respect the other inhabitants of the island.

e.g. Motorist prosecuted for drink dring the costs would be made up as follows:-

Cost of Prosecution lawyer £500

Cost of Police time - £300

Cost of Drug testing - £100

Medical examiner - £250

Fine - £500

Damage to street furniture

Cost of towing car

Example cost £2,500

Like wise graffitti -  costs to local authorities and government are immense in smashed glass, painted walls . People who are caught should be made to pay the full costs.

Why the contribution is important

Make the court system pay for itself by getting the lawbreakers to fully fund the cost of their actions.

Reduce DOI costs by getting repairs to street furniture etc paid for by the guilty.

Reduce Court costs to taxpayer.

Reduce offending.

Protect victims

There is a caveat that a person can only pay any fine if they have an income and ability to pay. The fine and court costs should reflect the person's income and responsibilities. And drink driving is surely best treated with a driving ban, extended retest and imprisonment.

People shouldn't,t do the crime full stop . Criminals come from every section of society. The ability to pay does not enter in to it. People need to take responsibility for their actions.

It does rather imply that if you happen to be unemployed or low income, you get a pass on fine paying or it is 'tailored' to income and 'ability to pay'. I sat in on a court case of a person who had been drunk, abusive and damaged property, and their legal aid lawyer said client was sorry, blah blah and said they couldn't pay a fine but would accept Community Service.Since when does the accused get to tell the Court what they will or won't accept? Best about it,they got no fine and walked away with the Service order.I heard them outside the Court with their mates smirking that' they'd told them judges what for' I came away very disillusioned indeed. No money? They paid for the booze that got them arrested and the fags they were smoking outside so what's this no money. On benefits it can be deducted at source. Because I earn a wage,I can be fined though and probably my fine would make up for the loss on non payer convictions..........Court needs to toughen up.
