My only comment to this is that when there is an RTC, we as the public are not aware if a vehicle is taxed and therefore insured (or it should be) - so perhaps an insurance disc could be utilised rather than find out post event when the driver has left the scene - this would also mean the IOM Road Policing Unit having to install ANPR systems on their vehicles and on access and egress to areas such as Douglas, etc and that would be a challenge in terms of Data Protection given it would be considered as excessively intrusive... in terms of savings, does the cost of the discs exceed the cost of the equipment, installation, implementation and monitoring.

The vehicle tax disk is not proof of insurance it just indicates that the holder had insurance at the time they taxed the vehicle this could have been cancelled the next day.
Scrap vehicle tax completely as a concept and increase income tax or increase tax on road fuel. This will save admin both for government and for the public.

This seems to tie in with suggestion above of moving vehicle licensing to the DVLA.

Why not in fact add to the tax disc and only issue it when you take out insurance, not just at the point you show it to the authorities. Also it is handy that the ordinary person can for themselves see if a car is taxed and insured. I do think its fair that you pay car tax according to the size of your engine..

gforce the car I have in Ireland has to have three discs - road tax, NCT (MOT) and insurance. All show their end date very prominently. The police do regular stop and check activities.

The Police ANPR camera checks if insurance is valid as well as taxed I think,so would be useful.Should also be linked to the English one .When out with my dog I often see expired tax discs and, being taxed and insured it makes me angry that some pay and some flaut the law at our expense.

Great idea also let people buy their car tax by monthly direct debit or in six monthly periods to reduce the number of people driving around untaxed.
