Medical Concerns

It is currently possible for drivers to tell a doctor/medical professional that they do not drive without a secondary check being made    . (People can do this if they fear they may lose their license due to ill health.)

This can have grave consequences if the person is unfit to drive or prescribed medication that may impair their driving ability. For example, insulin.

I would suggest having people's medical records updated with confirmation that they hold a driving license. This would enable doctors to link in with the licensing department if they felt a licence holder required additional review. Or provide patients with guidance on how to manage their medication/condition with driving in mind.

In addition, as a society we must promote having an adult conversation with others who driving skills have deteriorated. There are many people using the roads whom people have concerns over but never say anything. We would not permit a drink driver to go unchallenged but would we do the same with a person who was showing early signs of dementia?
