Licence refresher requirement

It is about time that all licence holders were required to do regular retraining. Most people who do the test promptly forget the rules of the road within minutes of passing the test. That is a normal thing, anyone who does exams will tell you this, and has to be countered for all of our sakes.  Basically how anyone can have a licence for life with absolutely no refresher requirements in this day and age is beyond me.

Why the contribution is important

The lack of knowledge of the rules of the road and good driving standards is evident from many comments on the safety challenge. Basic issues like being able to stop in the distance you can see, inability to overtake slower users within the requirements of the rules of the road and parking on junctions and footpaths are all ignored by most drivers.

It is time this was addressed and can only be done by licence refresher courses. Which is good for both road safety and employment opportunities, there is no reason the refresher courses has to be government run and private tuition/advanced driving organisations are more than capable of doing this.

No thanks, I think many residents would opt to leave the island if this was introduced.

Good luck to them if they do. I have heard comments from people who come over that they have no experience of our types of roads. Based on that they should have to do a driving test here before using our roads.

Not sure how they wouldn't have any experience when the UK has many more miles of country roads than that of the Island! Driving in the UK is a lot different to driving on the Island whereby you need to be a lot more alert as it is extremely busy pretty much everywhere with many more lanes, complicated road junctions, multi lane roundabouts etc . On that basis a driver with a UK license should and usually is a better driver than most who reside on the Island. If they were expected to take a driving test to drive on some basic country roads, tourism will become non existent.
