Keep Drive Safe Assembly in Schools

As a head of year at one of the island's secondary schools I have viewed the Drive Safe Assembly for the past 3 years which is delivered to our year 11 pupils. I think that this assembly should become a permanent fixture in a schools calendar.

This year there was a bit of confusion around the assembly and it was organised at the last moment as some organisations who were usually involved didn't participate due to changing roles and uncertainty surrounding who was in charge of the assembly. Thankfully it was eventually rushed together and we managed to fit this in to continue the tradition.

Why the contribution is important

The assembly is very hard hitting but very effective and promotes discussion amongst pupils and staff about the consequences of poor driving and putting themselves in dangerous situations etc. Several pupils approached both myself and their form tutors afterwards to discuss what they had seen and heard; it opened a dialogue which wouldn't necessarily have happened without the assembly taking place.

Please include the continuation of this assembly in the Road safety strategy. Going forward I would hope that all organisations will be more involved in the assembly ie the police, fire service and ambulance service and that there would be greater clarity surrounding the organisation of the assembly and who is required to attend. I feel that this assembly greatly benefits our pupils and emphasies to them the importance of driving safe on the Isle of Man in a very effective way.

I wholeheartedly agree with this suggestion, it has been invaluable to our students. In the past we have invited in the Sixth form to view the assembly again as a reminder.

I love the idea of this. I have not heard of it before but I can see that it would be a valuable resource that we should encourage.

This is such an important event - all teachers and parents are concerned about young , inexperienced drivers. These are hard hitting assemblies, but they certainly seem to have an impact on the students involved. I very much hope they can continue. T.WILLIAMS. CRHS
