Scrap Public Health

Public Health is an out of control self-perpetuating behemoth.

We are living longer and are healthier than ever before (less smoking, less drinking, etc,), yet Public Health would have us believe that we are in the grips of a personal health crisis. And by creating a crisis, they increase their budget, so can increase the panic, and then lobby for more policies which have little effect but ultimately make's everyone's life a little less enjoyable.

To create the 'panic' they are happy propagate misleading statistics - 25% of school kids are not 'overweight and obese' (it’s about 5%), 20% of Manx residents do not have an alcohol dependency (it’s between 1% and 2%) – and misrepresent or ignore science (vegans have lower life expectancy, tea-totallers have higher rates of dementia and heart attacks, there is such a thing as a healthy tan).

Public Health are mean-spirited puritans who implement policies which have no proof that they work, which typically do not affect them (e.g. soda tax, minimum alcohol pricing), are anti-free market (ban advertising and supermarket discounting), and against personal choice (no more Irn-Bru!).

Cut them down to size, make them focus on proper public health (infectious diseases, vaccines, etc.) and stop them wasting taxpayers money on an ideology of lies and deceit.

Why the contribution is important

The Public Health Directorate costs the Isle of Man approx. £1.5m per year.  Cut this in half and you'll not notice any difference.

I don't agree with this at all . People need to take more responsibility for their own health rather than expecting the DHSC to fix them once they have got poorly. People can only do this if they have the skills and knowledge to make healthy choices. Public health need to collect the necessary data to ensure that the interventions that they use are effective. Where did you get your figures from?
We shouldn't underestimate the work that public health do to protect and improve the health and wellbeing of the island’s whole population.

This contradicts any proposals, ideas or opinions that put prevention and early intervention at their core. In my view, Public Health is there to raise awareness and improve health to reduce future costs to the NHS.

Increased investment in a range of public health strategies to reduce and prevent ill health will ultimately lead to savings in health care.
