Rheumatology Dept

Rheumatolgy need operate a full time service  rather than an appointment only service.

Why the contribution is important

Rheumatoid athritis is a common problem. Sufferers cannot access rheumatology services unless they have an appointment which takes months.

This condition casues excruciating pain and is very debilatating. People who are suffering cannot get access to the correct pain relieving medications without the consent of the consultant who isn't present on the Island, and who operates an appointment only service.

It is unreasonable for these patients to wait months in pain and unable to do the most basic of tasks like get themselves dressed, go to the toilet, wash and feed themselves before they get to see the consultant. The GP's are limited to what drugs can be given. In extreme cases where the patient is unable to anything for themselves because of the pain and swelling caused by the condition the ambulance crews will not take patients to hospital as that deem that they are not emergency cases nor are they life threatening. What options are available to people who find themselves in this predicament?

As mentioned elsewhere under waiting times I've been suffering from suspected Rheumatoid Arthritis since last November but without a firm diagnosis I cannot get the treatment or benefits I need. I will finally get to see a Rheumatologist in November. This can't come soon enough for me!
