It is better for a person to be in their own home provided there is adequate provision of support and services.

From my observation, an elderly lady was discharged from hospital and sent home. She was immobile. Two carers came in the morning for approximately 30 minutes to get her up, washed, dressed and to give her her breakfast. She was visited again at lunchtime for 20 minutes and again in the evening to put her to bed.

In between times she was totally immobile. She lasted two weeks in such a situation before she had to go into care. The provision was totally inadequate.

Home care has been proven to be better for patient recovery and is considered the best way forward for healthcare provision. Alas, community services are still woefully underfunded with financial focus remaining on hospital services.

After hospitalisation, the 6 weeks of care given at home is totally inadequate.
