Dental Care for Pregnant Women

Waiting lists for should be introduced at all NHS dental practices, with a needs based scoring system and pregnant women being one of those given higher priority to join an NHS practice.

In additon, when all practices are full, pregnant women should be able to claim back the proportion of the cost that would have been payable to the NHS dentist had the woman not been entitled to free dental care. This would at least lower the financial burden of those with no option other than to pay for private dental care.

Why the contribution is important

Women are entitled to free dental care in the Isle of Man whilst they are pregnant and for 1 year after giving birth. NHS dentists are all currently full and not taking on any new patients.

Pregnant women need to pay extra attention to dental care and if you are not registered with an NHS dentist you have no option but to pay for private dental care, which is very expensive. You can only receive emergency dental treatment on the NHS by de-registering with your private practice.

There are also no waiting lists and it is pot luck as to whether a space is available on the date you enquire.

This means there are women on the Island who are paying a great deal of money for something every pregnant woman is entitled to, with no means to recoup any of the financial burden.

Focus groups and workshops are being arranged to consider key aspects of the review in more detail. A cross-section of the local community is needed to represent views from different perspectives. If you would like to participate in a workshop related to this topic please contact the Independent Review’s Secretariat at to be added to a contact list. The focus groups and workshops will support the overall gathering of evidence and be used to determine a practical and workable model for the future.

Good to see focus groups are being set up and should have a timescale for implementing findings and not drag on and end up with no positives.

In addition to governments current criteria for pregnancy, people on disability DLA care / mobility and unable to work should be entitled to free dental care as well as prescriptions as currently they don't get any free dental care.
